Life SciencesThe biomedical and biotechnological knowledge cluster that is Groningen regularly makes the international press with its research results. Groningen is among the top 3 Dutch cities with the most Life Sciences companies. They all participate actively in BioMedCity Groningen, an innovation-oriented network organisation that brings together private parties, public authorities and researchers.
What is Life Sciences?
Life Sciences is the domain of pharmaceutical and modern biotech companies. It is a combination of technologies where living organisms or parts of them are used to make better products or new processes. The developments in Life Sciences are of great social and economic significance. Healthcare can be improved by combating and preventing diseases more effectively. Food can be made healthier, safer and less perishable. Production processes can be made more sustainable. The scope of the life science sector The life science sector in the North has a turnover around the €10 billion mark and employs 57,000 people. The biomedical sub-sector has a turnover of around 2 billion and employs 7,000 people. Surrounding the city of Groningen there is a large and strong cluster of innovative companies that maintain close ties with the knowledge core (University of Groningen (RuG), Hanzehogeschool Groningen, University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) and the Van Hall Institute).
