Labour marketThe Northern economy is performing well, and is now measuring up to the rest of the Netherlands. There will certainly be favourable long-term developments in the core zones. Groningen has an abundant labour supply – because of the relatively high unemployment there is more supply than demand. That high labour force potential covers both higher and lower educational levels.
The province of Groningen’s 25 municipalities are highly divergent in terms of jobs. The municipality of Groningen accounts for about half (47.5%) of the provincial jobs within its municipal boundaries. With more than 15,000 jobs, Hoogezand-Sappemeer occupies second place in the province for employment opportunities.
That is followed by four municipalities with more than 10,000 jobs: the municipalities of Delfzijl, Veendam, Stadskanaal and Winschoten. There are more than 5,000 jobs in the municipalities of Leek, Haren, Vlagtwedde and Zuidhorn. Of the remaining 14 municipalities with fewer than 5,000 jobs, Eemsmond is the biggest with 4,896 and Ten Boer with 1,248 jobs the smallest.
